On April 17, the Moscow City Court sentenced politician Vladimir Kara-Murza* to 25 years in a strict-regime colony for treason, public dissemination of false information about the military, and activities of an undesirable organization. This was reported by Russian media correspondent Tatyana Bur from the courtroom.
“Penalty Kara-Murze VV in the form of imprisonment for 25 years with serving time in a strict regime colony with a fine of 400,000 rubles, a ban on journalistic activity for a period of 7 years and a restriction of freedom for 6 months after being released from the colony,” said judge Sergei Podoprigorov.
The hearings were held behind closed doors due to the “secret” stamp. Three cases are grouped together in a single procedure.
Case of Kara-Murza*
In early April, the prosecutor’s office asked the Moscow City Court to sentence Kara-Murza * to 25 years in prison for treason, “false” about the army and participation in the activities of an undesirable organization.
The politician has been in prison since April 2022. Initially, a criminal case was opened against Kara-Murza* for spreading false information about the Russian army (clause “e”, part 2, article 207.3 of the Criminal Code ). The reason for this was the politician’s speech in the House of Representatives of the US state of Arizona on the actions of Russian military personnel in Ukraine.
In July 2022, a criminal case was opened against the politician for the activities of an undesirable organization (part 1 of article 284.1 of the Criminal Code), and in October he became a defendant in a treason case (Article 275 of the Penal Code). According to investigators, Kara-Murza* provided organizations in NATO member countries with “assistance directed against the security of Russia”, for which he received 30,000 dollars a month.
According to Kara-Murza*’s lawyer, Vadim Prokhorov, the reason the politician was charged with treason was criticism of Russian authorities during public speeches in Lisbon, Helsinki and Washington.
Kara-Murza pleads not guilty to any of the charges and considers his persecution to be politically motivated.
Kara-Murza*’s lawyers also said the arrested politician’s health deteriorated during his time in the isolation ward. According to them, he developed polyneuropathy – problems with the vessels in the legs.
