Washington: Top Indian American oncologist Dr. Dattatreyadu Nori has been appointed Senior Consultant of the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Chennai-centre. Describing the inauguration of ‘Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’ in India as “a great achievement”, Dr. Nori said that receiving cancer treatment and counseling from the best cancer institute in the world will not only save a large number of lives , but will also help in raising awareness in the fight against this deadly disease. Nori was awarded the Padma Shri in 2017 for his contribution to the medical field.

Dr. Nori said that he wanted to bring the best of cancer treatment methods from America to India. The Indian American doctor, who recently returned from a tour of several Indian states including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Assam, said first aid for cancer should be the best. He said, ‘The first treatment should be the best. There is no room for error in this. You know if something goes wrong and I want to do something else, it won’t help.”

Dr. Nori said, ‘This is what I wanted to do and finally it is happening. Memorial (Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) to open in 2022. Every year 13 to 14 lakh cases are reported in India. Good cancer centers have come up in the last 10 years, both in the private and government sectors.” However, they are not enough to treat all the people as cases are increasing rapidly, he said.

In a career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Nori served as Professor of Oncology and as Chairman and Director of the Cancer Center at the world-renowned Cornell Medical Center in New York. In 2014, he was given one of America’s most prestigious civilian awards, ‘The Ellis Island Medical Honor’ for his exemplary work. He has also received the ‘Tribute of Life’ award from the American Cancer Society.
