Actor Alec Baldwin hasn’t had a happy seven days since he accidentally shot and killed cameraman Halyna Hutchins while filming Rust.
The actor thought the gun, which was a prop, was unloaded when he pointed it at the cameraman and pulled the trigger. Then it turned out that the gun was loaded with a single shot, and the actor has now been charged with manslaughter.
Accuses the family of wanting to profit from death
However, Baldwin has also been sued by Halyna’s family, who are seeking compensation for the loss of a loved one. Baldwin intervened in the case and has now demanded that the judge dismiss the case.
The actor justifies this claim by referring to the fact that the family’s relationship with Halyna was strained and the case was only filed in an attempt to profit from her death.
“The plaintiffs – who had been separated physically, financially and emotionally from Halyna years before her death – have no valid claim against the defendant,” the court documents state.
In addition to Baldwin, the family has sued weapons expert Hanna Gutierrez-Reed, who handled firearms on set, director David Halls and the production company behind the film.
Says the actor is trying to shirk responsibility
The family’s attorney said in a statement that Baldwin’s motion to dismiss shows he is once again trying to avoid responsibility in the case. The family filed this lawsuit to ensure that Baldwin is held accountable for his actions.
Regarding the criminal case that has been filed against Baldwin and Hanna, the actor said it was a gross injustice, but he could face up to 18 months in prison if convicted. . Baldwin is accused of pulling the trigger and weapons expert Hanna of not making sure the gun was unloaded. The director was also accused of carelessly handling a deadly firearm, but decided not to defend himself.
Make a deal with the widower
Baldwin was also sued last year by widow Halyna and their nine-year-old son. A settlement was reached in that case in October, and the husband later said he saw no need for the actor to take on any additional liability in the case.
