Seoul decided to develop a design project for a promising surface combat “arsenal ship” Joint Firepower Ship with ballistic missiles on board. The Republic Navy plans to build three such ships.
It is assumed that each of the ships will be armed with 80 ballistic missiles. If necessary, the ship will have to deliver a series of strikes against North Korean military installations.
The construction of the vessels will be carried out by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) with the participation of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) – the former will have to submit a sketch of the vessel within one year, after which the plans and timetables for construction will be determined. The presence of three ships will allow one of them to be constantly on combat duty.
The South Korean government has said shipbuilding is included in the overall medium-term defense plan for 2024. The results of this work will be available in five years.
Along with this, the South Korean Ministry of Defense adopted a program for the development and serial production of ballistic missiles for these ships, the implementation of which is given over 12 years – from 2024 to 2036. Apparently, in 2036 , three “arsenal ships” will be commissioned. The missile program will cost the country’s budget 600 billion won (about $467 million).
