Student technical researches to solve the challenges facing Qatar

The Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, concluded its training program for 10 students from the Qatar Academy for Science and Technology, who presented innovative ideas for important research projects. The internship, which included an outstanding two-day-a-week program from February 5 to March 9, 2023, saw the students collaborate with researchers from QEERI’s Energy and Corrosion Research Centers on several projects focused on sustainable technologies. Commenting on the programme, Dr. Marc Vermeersch, Executive Director of QEERI, said: "Our cooperation with Qatar Academy for Science and Technology embodies our commitment to building and enhancing human capabilities in Qatar, as QEERI works with Qatari schools and educational institutions to support and complement their curricula with educational initiatives such as the internship programme, which contributes to enhancing their educational curricula to keep pace with global systems, enabling them to Meet the current and future requirements of the country’s labor market". For his part, Mr. Vaughan Lewis, Assistant Director of Qatar Academy for Science and Technology said: "The QEERI team has helped Qatar Academy of Science and Technology students fulfill their aspirations to become innovators with the knowledge and skills needed to find solutions to the challenges facing Qatar and the world, by engaging our students in real research, and giving them experiences and opportunities to gain beyond the classroom, Pointing out that the researchers at QEERI have made an amazing shift in our students’ concepts of how to influence the world around them, and to achieve endless inspiration and creativity through their studies, and we cannot wait to see the opportunities available for our future graduates to join QEERI as researchers within few years". The students trained under the supervision of researchers at QEERI, including Dr. Hanan Farahat, Senior Research Director, Dr. Mauld Kempebi, Scientist at the Institute, and Dr. Daniel Astodillo, Scientist at the Institute, where the trainees received, in cooperation with the Corrosion Research Center, practical experience helping to design And the manufacture of an electrochemical cell for electrical polishing and improving the mechanical properties of 3D-printed parts, according to different printing strategies, and the trainees at the Energy Center cooperated with researchers to measure the effect of solar radiation and temperature on photovoltaic solar panels, and to test a low-cost system for measuring solar energy, using advanced techniques to monitor solar radiation. At the conclusion of the program, the students gave presentations about their research work to their colleagues and researchers at QEERI, and then held an open discussion during which they shared ideas about their experience working with the teams of trainers that QEERI had appointed to train them.
