The Support Fund for the Families of Political Prisoners was created in Russia by associates of Vladimir Kara-Murza, sentenced to 25 years in prison. On this subject Meduza reported. in reference to Kara-Murza’s social networks.
The opposition politician explained that the main mission of the October 30 Foundation is to financially support the families of political prisoners of the Putin regime, “regardless of their political opinions and religious beliefs”. On October 30, Russia celebrates the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repressions.
Vladimir Kara-Murza appealed to all benevolent people who have the opportunity to donate to the Foundation. The first payment – 90,000 euros – was made by Kara-Murza himself. He donated the money from the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize and the Courage Prize, awarded to him by the Council of Europe and the Axel Springer Foundation in 2022.
“There are hundreds of political prisoners in today’s Russia, more than in the last years of Soviet power. All are imprisoned without guilt and without crimes – only because their beliefs do not coincide with the official line of power. Their families, their children, who found themselves not only without loved ones, but also often without means of subsistence, were victims of state repression,” said Vladimir Kara-Murza.
The fund’s board includes public figures and human rights activists from Russia and abroad. Their list is expected to appear on the organization’s website. Evgenia Kara-Murza, the wife of convict Vladimir, became the head of the fund.
April 17 Moscow City Court sentenced politician and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza at age 25 in a strict regime colony. He was found guilty for articles about “disseminating falsehood” about the Russian military, conducting the activities of an “undesirable” organization and “high treason”. Kara-Murza declined to plead guilty.
