The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the ambassadors of the United States, Britain and Canada due to “gross interference in the internal affairs” of the country. On this subject reported TASS in the department.

The reason for the ambassadors’ call was also “activities that do not correspond to diplomatic status”, the ministry said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not specify what it is exactly.

On April 17, the Moscow City Court sentenced politician Vladimir Kara-Murza* to 25 years in prison for treason, “trick” on the Russian army and participation in the activities of an undesirable organization. The announcement of the verdict was attended by 40 diplomats from 24 countries.

British Ambassador to Russia Deborah Bronnert, US Ambassador Lynn Tracy and Canadian Ambassador Alison Leclerc condemned the verdict and came out in favor of Kara-Murza*. Bronnert called the trial “rushed” and, on behalf of the British government, called for the politician’s release.

The British Foreign Office, after the verdict of Kara-Murza*, summoned the Russian ambassador Andrey Kelin. The department noted that the country’s authorities would consider steps to bring to justice those involved in the politician’s “detention and ill-treatment”. Judge Sergei Podoprigorov, who is presiding over the politician’s trial, is already under British sanctions.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry appointed speeches of foreign diplomats after the verdict of Kara-Murza * “direct interference in the internal affairs of Russia”. The British ambassador’s statement, according to Zakharova, is “nothing more than an attempt to put pressure on the Russian judicial system”.

“Traitors and traitors, modern Vlasovs and Bandera, who are applauded in the West, will get what they deserve. Foreign curators will not help them avoid just punishment,” Zakharova said.

She also noted that diplomats from “hostile countries” involved in “inciting discord and enmity” in Russian society would be expelled from the country.
