The start of the second phase of the National Olympiad for Creativity in Mathematics, Science and Engineering, NIO 2023

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education, represented by the Educational Guidance Department, launched the second phase of the National Olympiad competition for creativity in mathematics, science and engineering, NIO 2023, in its second edition, in cooperation with the College of Engineering at Qatar University, Texas A&M University at Qatar and the Science Club. This competition aims to encourage students to study science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics subjects in an integrated manner, to introduce and integrate artificial intelligence and technology into the educational process, and to develop students’ capabilities in specialized fields that support innovation and competitiveness. The competition, which targets students of the primary stage (sixth grade) and the preparatory and secondary stages, is based on competition in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering by submitting scientific projects according to the required special standards and controls. Three main areas for projects have been identified, which are energy, robots, smart devices and software systems. Each participating team consists of a supervising teacher and four students. Each team chooses a project idea and determines the procedures for its implementation, while explaining how to link science, technology, engineering, reading, mathematics and arts subjects, to solve the problem presented in creative and professional ways, and to document all engineering design steps and the references that were relied upon. The first phase of the competition ended in mid-January with the nomination of 45 teams (15 teams from each school stage: primary, preparatory, and secondary) among the 200 schools that participated in the competition from various government and private schools in the country, in order to compete in the second and final stage of the competition. Committees composed of experts specialized in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering discussed and evaluated the projects implemented by the students. In preparation for the second phase of the competition, specialized training workshops were provided to the teachers supervising the participating teams, on artificial intelligence, digital modeling, engineering design, and smart phone applications, presented by specialized doctors from Texas A&M University at Qatar and the College of Engineering at Qatar University. It is noteworthy that the date for the closing ceremony of the competition, the announcement of the results and the distribution of prizes to the winners is scheduled for Thursday, May 18th.
