On well-prepared soil, you can get a good crop of strawberries for several years in a row. To do this, you need to follow simple rules. Experts from Rosselkhoztsentr talked about this.
where to plant
Strawberries are grown in the same place for a maximum of 4-5 years. Otherwise, the berries will grow small, and the harvest will be poor. It is best to plant strawberries in the beds where legumes, carrots and parsley once grew. An unsuccessful place will be the area where there were potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers.
What type of soil is suitable
Strawberries do not grow well and bear fruit in acid soils. It is best to plant in slightly acidic or neutral soil. You can deoxidize the soil on the site using lime or wood ash.
At the same time, the best soils for cultivation are chernozem and sandy loam soils. But not always in the garden you can find them. There is a way out in this case. Thus, if the soil is heavy, sand should be added when digging (¼ bucket per square meter). But if the soil in the area is sandy, then for 1 m². m add a bucket of dry clay.
How to prepare a garden
The first step is to remove weeds and remove last year’s plant debris. The next step is to dig up the area and apply organic fertilizer (if you haven’t done this in the fall). Then the bed should be leveled with a rake. And a few weeks before planting, the soil should be disinfected with fungicides.
When to plant strawberries
Planting time for strawberries varies by region.
In the south of the country, strawberries can be planted as early as the end of March – the beginning of April.
In the middle lane, landing can be started from the second half of April.
In the northwest, this stage is carried out closer to the second half of May, when the earth warms up sufficiently.
In Siberia and the Urals, it can be planted at the end of May.
