The Kostroma branch of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) reports that the top prize in the region named after polar explorer Nina Demme was received by Kostroma tenth-grader Dmitry Kuklin. Dmitry Kuklin became the winner of the prize thanks to his research on the role of fire ants of the species Formica aquilonia in the ecology of pine forests in the Kostroma region. Yesterday, the winner’s diploma and a cash prize were presented to the gifted student by the chairman of the competition jury, Anatoly Antsiferov, and the director of the Department of Education and Science, Ilya Morozov. The scientific adviser of the first laureate, Tatyana Shatrova, also received the first Nina Demme Medal for her role in training young scientists in the Kostroma Territory.
It should be noted that this is not the first prize in the field of biology for Dmitry Kuklin – he has already won the Step into the Future youth forum and international competitions in biology and ecology.
