Russian scientists from Sechenov University have come to the sensational conclusion that older, obese people live longer and feel better. A study of centenarians showed that they all had very decent body fat, reports The Eastern Herald.
Specialists of the Department of Hospital Therapy No. 2 of the First Moscow State Medical University. IM Sechenov studied the composition of the body of centenarians. People over the age of 90 entered the lens of scientists. It turned out that in older obese people, all forecasts for the future are significantly improved compared to those with normal or reduced body weight.
The optimal body mass index associated with the lowest mortality rate is overweight or grade I obesity. In addition, there are gender differences in the body composition of older people. Women, by definition, have more fatty tissue than men. At the same time, subcutaneous fat in women is more in the legs, and in men – in the abdomen.
Scientists believe that special substances are produced in fatty tissue over time, which help to strengthen bone tissue.
“We found in the group of centenarians who passed the 90-year mark, a lot of overweight people, but at the same time with normal indicators of bone tissue. We need to continue to study the paradox of obesity,” said Svetlana Topolyanskaya, associate professor of Hospital Therapy Department No. 2 at Sechenov University, among the study authors.
