The U.S. military conducted a test launch of a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile without a warhead. This was reported by Vandenberg Space Force Base.
“(The Army) conducted an operational test launch of Minuteman III without a warhead on April 19,” reports RIA Novosti.
The US military department noted that the tests are designed to demonstrate the readiness of US nuclear forces and “instill confidence in the lethality and effectiveness of the nation’s nuclear deterrent.”
It is reported that the ICBM was randomly selected from the Montana arsenals and delivered to the launch site in California. The rocket flew 4.2 thousand miles (6.76 thousand kilometers) over the Pacific Ocean.
We learned yesterday that the US Air Force had asked Congress for $4.4 billion to replace the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile with the Sentinel. The Air Force Department said in a statement that the Minuteman III, first deployed in 1970, is the oldest land-based strategic missile system in the world. It should be noted that this measure is crucial for the country’s nuclear modernization.
