Activist arrested in Yekaterinburg for reporting Gershkovich’s detention

On Wednesday, Yekaterinburg’s Verkh-Isetsky District Court sent activist Yaroslav Shirshikov to jail for two months in a criminal case for justifying terrorism over his post about the death of blogger Vladlen Tatarsky. This is reported by “Mediazona” and “Sota”.

Shirchikov in late March was the first to report the arrest in Yekaterinburg of Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich, who was later charged with espionage and sent to prison.

Shirshikov himself was arrested the day before. According to lawyer Fyodor Akchermyshev, the case against him was brought because of a message on the Gusarskaya Bravado telegram channel, published shortly after the death of the pro-war blogger Tatarsky in an explosion in Saint Petersburg. At the same time, the message said that its author was “against (that) something explode in the cities and people die”, however, concerning Tatarsky himself, it contained the wish for a “glassy earth”.

Earlier, pro-war activists wrote complaints about Shirshikov’s posts about the deaths of Tatarsky and Darya Dugina, who was also killed in an explosion last year.

By message “Mediazones”, no one was allowed to enter the courtroom about the election of a preventive measure to the activist, except for a lawyer and a prosecutor. Lawyer Akchermyshev said “Jump” that the defense suggested to the court to choose a preventive measure unrelated to detention, but the court did not listen to it. According to the lawyer, Shirshikov was not beaten or humiliated after his arrest.

Earlier, Yaroslav Shirshikov became known as one of the leaders of the protests against the construction of a temple on the site of the city square, which ended in the success of the protesters.

In Russia, in recent years, dozens of criminal cases have been brought for justifying terrorism, including actual prison sentences.

Vladlen Tatarsky (Maxim Fomin) died in an explosion in Saint Petersburg on the evening of April 2. Dozens of people were injured in the explosion, but one Tatarsky was killed. Suspected of having committed an explosion, a resident of Saint Petersburg, Daria Trepova (Darya Trepova), was arrested, she was accused of terrorist attack. The Russian investigation claims that the special services of Ukraine were involved in the explosion, in Kiev, this is either denied or left without comment.
