Chandigarh. Radical preacher Amritpal Singh is absconding even a month after the Punjab Police cracked down on him after his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station for the release of one of his arrested associates.
His wife Kirandeep Kaur was stopped by immigration officials at the Amritsar airport on Thursday when she was trying to board a flight to London. Amritpal had married Britain-based Kaur in February this year. The proceedings against Amritpal and members of his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’ began on March 18.
He, however, escaped the clutches of the police twice – first on March 18 by changing vehicles in Jalandhar district and again on March 28 in Hoshiarpur when he returned to Punjab with his key aide Papalpreet Singh. But Papalpreet, who was in contact with Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI, has been arrested.
Several cases have been registered against Khalistan sympathizers and their associates for allegedly creating disharmony, attempt to murder, assault on police personnel and obstructing public servants in lawful discharge of duty. In several places including Patiala, Kurukshetra and Delhi Despite being seen in multiple CCTV footages in disguise, the radical preacher is yet to be caught by the police.
While absconding, two videos and an audio clip of Amritpal surfaced on social media. In one of his two videos that surfaced on March 30, Amritpal insisted that he was not a fugitive and would appear soon. The pro-Khalistan preacher had claimed that he was not the type of people who would flee the country.
There were rumors that Amritpal might surrender on Baisakhi at Takht Damdama Sahib in Talwandi Sabo, Bathida, but this did not happen. The police continued to look for his possible hideouts and had recently conducted raids in Sirsa, Haryana. Earlier, searches were also conducted in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
