Mumbai Rajasthan Royals and England wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler says if a commentator criticizes a player, he is just doing his job and accepting it should be an integral part of any cricketer’s career.
Butler said in an interview with Humans of Bombay, “Acknowledgement is a big part of your work. Accepting that the broadcaster pays someone to give their opinion, they are just doing their job. When they criticize me, it is not a personal attack on me. And I watch other sports, he said. I watch football and go ‘oh how did he miss that? It was that simple. That’s exactly what people do when I drop a catch or get out on a low score. I do the same when I watch other sports. It just has to be accepted.
The England limited-overs captain says he always wanted to be an all-format cricketer and not being able to perform in Test cricket is something that still bothers him. Has to be the better ODI and T20 player. I was determined to become an all-format player and a very successful Test cricketer. I’ve played a lot of Test cricket but never been able to consistently perform at a level where I feel I’ve achieved what I wanted to do and that frustration will always be there. I have always wanted to be one of the best players in the world.
Butler said the kind of support Indian cricketers are getting even while playing overseas series is an eye-opener. “The way Indian sportspersons are loved and supported, their level of fame is unbelievable. The only thing (I) can connect with is English football. It’s fascinating to see how they deal with it, facing the media. IPL has learned how the best players deal with it amidst the chaos.
Butler said, “Just saw when (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni came out to bat that night (against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023). The expectations of the audience were so high. The way he behaves amidst the situation and outside pressure is quite unbelievable. He said, “Wherever the Indian team goes to play, there is a lot of support… Craig Keysweater took me to Manchester Ground (for the debut match) in the car.” And I saw a crowd of Indian fans waiting for the team bus to arrive. It was an eye opening experience. Butler said that more focus on the upcoming 50-over World Cup to be held in India will be given only after the IPL.
He said, “India is one of the best places to play cricket. So it’s going to be huge. Once the IPL gets over, the focus will start shifting towards that. England have got a strong group of players. Our cricket has gone from strength to strength since 2015. Our team is good, balanced.
