Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has been re-elected for a second presidential term. Its renewal was supported by 459 of the 462 deputies present at the meeting of the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba – the local parliament.
Diaz-Canel will serve as interim president until 2028. He has led the country since 2019, when the presidency was restored to Cuba. Before that, the republic was ruled by Raul Castro, who is now a member of that same parliament, who empowered Diaz-Canel for another term. The youngest of the Castro brothers is 91 years old today.
Parliament also voted to extend the powers of the Vice President of Cuba, elected the composition of the Council of State and the government.
Miguel Diaz-Canel last visited Russia in the fall of 2022. Then, in the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the President of Cuba condemned Western sanctions against Russia. Last week, he also accused the United States of sparking conflict in Ukraine and inciting Russophobia around the world.
