The European Commission may suspend imports of Ukrainian wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds until June 5. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Agriculture of Romania, Petre Daya.
The Agriculture Ministers of Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia held an online meeting on the supply of Ukrainian cereals on Wednesday, which was joined by EC Vice-President Valdis Dubrovskis.
In a press conference after the talks, Daya said the European commissioner called illegal the decisions of Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia to restrict the import of agricultural products from of Ukraine and asked countries to cancel them. Daya also noted that the EC presented an aid package of 100 million euros for these countries and Romania from the reserve fund and a package to regulate imports from Ukraine.
“This package provides for a mechanism to stop imports until June 5 for cereals, maize, sunflower seeds and rapeseed. This action can be taken within 48 hours after states reverse unilateral decisions to ban imports,” the minister said.
Previously, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia decided to suspend the supply of grain from Ukraine due to threats to local farmers facing market overstocking with imported agricultural products.
