Rospotrebnadzor official Anna Popova said an increase in the incidence of the Arktur coronavirus strain is expected in Russia in late May.
She explained that this was due to the start of the holiday period.
Moreover, according to Popova, there is nothing unexpected in the emergence of a new strain of coronavirus.
“This is a new gene variant, a new mutation of the already known Omicron, inside this variant,” said RIA Novosti by quoting it.
A feature of this strain is contagiousness – that is, greater infectivity than its predecessors. Popova pointed out that even a small contact can lead to infection and the development of the disease.
Earlier, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he hoped for the end of the coronavirus pandemic in 2023.
