Today, April 20, exactly 162 years ago, the Society of Physicians was established in the Orel region. The press service of the regional government recalled such a memorable date.
The community was actively engaged in the fight against epidemics, held public lectures, published printed recommendations for the treatment and prevention of diseases. The Orlov Society of Physicians had the task of monitoring the progress of all branches of medicine, promoting its further scientific development and helping widows, the disabled and the poor.
The Society’s Charter was approved in April 1863 and 28 years later it was transformed into the Oryol Medical Society. Among its honorary members were such outstanding personalities as Sergei Botkin, Pyotr Dyakonov and Nikolai Pirogov.
