Germany shuts down nuclear power plant – Finland launches new reactor

While the last nuclear power plants in Germany have been taken off the grid, a new nuclear reactor in Finland has started regular operation after several years of delay.

The Olkiluoto-3 reactor, with a capacity of 1,600 megawatts, should cover 14% of the country’s electricity production in the future. “This stabilizes electricity prices and plays an important role in Finland’s green transition,” TVO CEO Jarmo Tanhua said.

Repair and increase in value

The third reactor at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant on the west coast of Finland was built by the Franco-German consortium Areva-Siemens and was originally scheduled to be connected to the grid in 2009. However, this procedure was postponed for several occasions, more recently, for example, due to the repair of damage. Rising construction costs also caused a delay in the process.

14 years late

In December 2021, the reactor was launched more than ten years late. In December last year, the Olkiluoto-3 nuclear power plant was to start regular electricity production. Instead, it launched in April. According to the operator, the new reactor will be able to produce energy for at least 60 years.

Nuclear energy will be 30%

Finland relies on nuclear power, in particular, to replace energy imports from Russia. According to TVO, in future the three reactors of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant will together supply 30% of electricity production in Finland. In addition to Olkiluoto, the country has another power plant with two reactors – Loviisa.
