United Nations, Apr 21 (PTI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India is looking forward to its participation in next month’s meeting of the Special Envoys on Afghanistan to be hosted by UN chief Antonio Guterres.
Guterres will host the meeting in Qatar’s capital Doha on May 1 and two months later. Responding to a question about India’s participation in the meeting, Jaishankar said, “We are looking into it.” We are looking at it positively, but I think we will take an appropriate decision when the time comes closer.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said the purpose of the meeting was to reinvigorate international commitment around common goals to move forward in a sustainable manner on the situation in Afghanistan. We believe that the immediate priority is to pursue an approach based on pragmatism and principles and with strategic fortitude and to identify parameters for constructive, flexible, principled and creative engagement.
The Afghan Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021 and since then the country has been grappling with an economic crisis. Many countries have refused to recognize the government of Taliban.
