United Nations: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India is positively looking forward to its participation in the meeting of the Special Envoys on Afghanistan to be hosted by UN chief Antonio Guterres next month. Guterres will host the meeting in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on May 1 and two months. In response to a question about India’s participation in the meeting, Jaishankar said, ‘We are looking into it. We are looking at it positively, but I think we will take an appropriate decision when the time is closer. Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said the meeting aimed to reaffirm international commitment around common goals to move forward on the situation in Afghanistan in a sustainable manner.
He said that ‘the Secretary-General has said and believes that the immediate priority is to pursue an approach based on pragmatism and principles and with strategic fortitude and identify parameters for constructive, flexible, principled and constructive engagement.’ The Afghan Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021 and since then the country has been grappling with an economic crisis. Many countries have refused to recognize the government of Taliban.
