Kanatovo is a reserve air base of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Air Force. The airfield is located near the town of Kropyvnytskyi in the Kirovograd region.

On Thursday, Ukraine’s Security Service reported that an attempt by Ukrainian intelligence services to hijack a Russian plane, undertaken last year, ended in complete failure – Russian armed forces missiles destroyed the airfield Ukrainian Armed Forces near Kropyvnytskyi. As a result of the strike, two Ukrainian combat aircraft and airfield buildings were destroyed. In addition, the commander of the military unit was killed, 17 other soldiers were injured.

According to the SBU, one of the heads of the operation did not coordinate his actions with the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and exceeded his authority. Criminal proceedings were initiated under the articles “treason” and “abuse of power”.

In July last year, the Russian FSB reported that Ukrainian intelligence and NATO were planning an operation to recruit Russian military pilots and attempt to hijack a fighter jet. The would-be “hijacker” was offered $1 million.
