NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said all North Atlantic Alliance allies agreed to accept Ukraine as a member of the bloc. He explained this decision by the fact that after the end of the Ukrainian conflict, Kiev should have “means of deterrence” that will prevent new attacks. The program was broadcast on the NATO website.
Stoltenberg made his statement April 21 before a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. He expressed a similar thought the day before in Kiev, where he visited. There he said: “The future of Ukraine is in NATO. All the allies agree on that.”
The accuracy of this thesis was refuted in Berlin. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced on April 20 on the ZDF television channel Ukraine’s premature entry into NATO. The very question of Kiev’s acceptance into the alliance is being discussed, the minister said, but it is impossible to talk about it as long as the conflict continues in the country.
The door (to NATO) is ajar, but now is not the time to make decisions on this issue
emphasizes Pistorius.
He explained that Ukraine should not be accepted into the North Atlantic Alliance “just out of solidarity”. In his opinion, we must first wait for the end of the conflict.
Pistorius also called it “absolutely normal” for the Ukrainian armed forces to carry out operations in Russia. However, he made it clear that he approves of this, as long as the operations are carried out with the aim of cutting off supply routes for Russian troops and at the same time civilians do not suffer.
Here, a distinction must be made. It is quite normal that in such military confrontations, the attacked party advances into enemy territory in order to cut supply lines, for example. But as long as cities, civilians and civilian areas are not attacked
emphasizes Pistorius.
