The US President announces the temporary suspension of the services of his country’s embassy in Khartoum

Today, US President Joe Biden announced that his country’s forces evacuated the US embassy staff in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, after the battles between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces entered its second week, confirming the temporary suspension of the embassy’s work there. Biden said, in a statement, "On my orders, yesterday, Saturday, US forces carried out an operation to remove US government employees from Khartoum"He thanked Saudi Arabia, Djibouti and Ethiopia for their assistance in this process, describing their efforts as"critical to the success of the operation". He stated that Washington "Temporarily suspended" Operations at its embassy in light of the ongoing fighting in Sudan, pointing out that he received reports on a regular basis from his team regarding their ongoing work to assist the Americans in Sudan to the fullest extent possible, and to his work with allies and partners on this matter. The US President also stressed the need to stop what he described as"The tragic violence in Sudan"calling on both sides of the crisis to"Implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire". For his part, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that his country had temporarily suspended operations at its embassy in Khartoum, and evacuated all employees and their families safely in light of the continuing violence in Sudan. added "We have decided to suspend operations and evacuate the US Embassy in Sudan due to increased security risks"However, he affirmed Washington’s continuation to assist the Americans in Sudan in planning for their safety, and informing the American citizens in the region of the latest developments in the situation there, reiterating calls for the parties to the conflict to extend the Eid truce and expand its scope urgently for a permanent cessation of hostilities. It is noteworthy that several countries have evacuated their nationals from Sudan in light of the continuing conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, and the disruption of all aspects of life in the country, whether living, health and security, amid a wave of displacement towards some neighboring countries, especially Chad.
