Ukraine and the Baltic countries criticized Chinese ambassador to France Lou Shaye for his remarks on Crimea. According to RIA FAN, after that, the ambassadors of the People’s Republic of China were summoned to Latvia and Estonia for explanations. Kiev stressed that the diplomat’s provocative statement did not correspond to Beijing’s official position.
The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Chaye gave a detailed interview to the French television channel LCI. During the conversation, he said that the Crimean Peninsula originally belonged to Russia, then to the RSFSR. And it was only by the decision of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU Nikita Khrushchev in Soviet times that the region was “gifted” for Ukraine.
Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics called such a statement by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China unacceptable. The Estonian Foreign Ministry has indicated that it does not understand or accept Beijing’s position on Crimea. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis pointed out that such statements by the Chinese side explain “the Baltic countries’ distrust of Chinese mediation on the issue of peace in Ukraine”.
