Alejandro Toledo, who led Peru from 2001 to 2006, was extradited from the United States. According to The Guardian, Toledo was flown to Lima to be charged with corruption.
Dressed in a green jacket and red sweater, Toledo, 77, is escorted by Peruvian police and US marshals as they descend the stairs of a commercial flight at Lima International Airport.
According to the publication, Toledo is accused of receiving $35 million in bribes from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht. According to law enforcement, the money was transferred to secure victory in a public works bid to build a highway from Peru to Brazil.
Toledo himself denies any involvement in the corruption scheme and considers himself the victim of “political persecution”. As noted by lawyer Roberto Su, his client is in poor health and “the rights of Toledo have not been respected”, quotes The Guardian.
Earlier there were reports of riots in Peru and protests demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and elections in 2023.
