Great power tensions reach historic highs

UN Secretary-General António Guterres told a meeting of the organization’s Security Council that tensions between major powers had reached a historic high.

“We are facing unprecedented and interconnected crises. The multilateral system is under the greatest pressure since the creation of the United Nations. Tensions between the great powers have reached an all-time high,” said António Guterres.

Furthermore, he again criticized the special military operation in Ukraine, pointing out that it only exacerbates the global economic turmoil caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The United States promised Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov a “cold reception” when he attended a meeting of the UN Security Council. This was said by Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov.

In turn, Lavrov earlier accused UN Secretary General António Guterres of not maintaining a neutral stance in the situation in Ukraine.
