Dhaka : Senior Bangladesh leader Mohammad Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh at a state ceremony on Monday. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet colleagues. Speaker Shireen Shiman Chowdhary administered the oath to 73-year-old Shahabuddin at the historic Durbar Hall of ‘Bang Bhavan’. Besides Prime Minister Hasina and family members of the new president, politicians, Supreme Court judges and senior civil and military officials attended the event.
Shahabuddin will replace Abdul Hameed, whose term ended on Sunday. Shahabuddin signed the presidential oath documents after the swearing-in ceremony. He was elected president unopposed in February this year as the candidate of the ruling Awami League. The office of the President receives additional attention, especially during general elections because the President appoints the Prime Minister and becomes the country’s constitutional guardian. Bangladesh is due to hold general elections in December or January next year amid growing differences between the ruling Awami League and the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) over the electoral system.
In a media interview last week, the trial court judge, Shahabuddin, had said that it was largely the responsibility of the Election Commission to create an atmosphere to encourage voters to cast their votes and he expected the independent constitutional body to play its proper role. Did. He said that after assuming office, he would review the political situation and assess whether he needed to play any role in mitigating disputes between political parties.
