Tokyo: Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Monday that he would not dissolve the lower house of parliament for mid-term elections after the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won four out of five parliamentary by-elections. Kishida told reporters at the Prime Minister’s Office, “I am not thinking about dissolution and general elections at the moment, as we have to complete important policies one by one.”
The ruling LDP, led by Kishida, won four out of five seats in the parliamentary by-elections, while the opposition Japan Innovation Party got one seat. The LDP defeated the opposition party’s candidates in three constituencies of the House of Representatives – the lower house, the House of Councilors and one constituency of the upper house. The Japan Innovation Party defeated the LDP to win a lower house seat, while the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party lost all three constituencies where it fielded official candidates. There is speculation that Mr Kishida is planning an election after the G-7 summit in Hiroshima next month.
