Covid infection is likely to increase the risk of heart attack: Dr. Purohit

Shimla. Dr. Naresh Purohit, Advisor, National Communicable Disease Control Program, said that people infected with Covid infection have a high tendency of blood clotting, which increases the risk of heart attack.

Dr Purohit told Univarta here that according to recent scientific research data across the world, COVID-19 may increase the risk of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) to a great extent. For this reason, cases of sudden cardiac arrest are coming to the fore for the last few months. He urged the Ministry of Health to allocate funds for research into the reasons behind these deaths, especially in the young population, and also suggested setting up of Sudden Death Investigation Committees to investigate to prevent panic among people.

Dr. Purohit said that in the last few months, there has been an increase in the number of deaths due to two types of sudden cardiac arrest. The first is sudden death after acute myocardial infarction. Second, sudden death is due to causes other than heart attack. He stressed that the government should install public access defibrillators and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be introduced in the higher secondary school curriculum.

He said that people above 30 years of age should get their blood pressure, blood sugar and fasting lipid profile checked. In addition, people over the age of 40 should have an annual cardiac check-up, which includes an electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, and an exercise tolerance (treadmill) test. He added that there is no need for youngsters to suddenly start an unusually strenuous exercise routine. He recommended eating healthy, exercising regularly, maintaining ideal body weight, avoiding smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, reducing stress and getting at least six to eight hours of sleep. If one has high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol then it should be controlled.
