United Nations: India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country by the end of this month. According to the United Nations, India’s population is expected to reach 1.425 billion. India’s population is expected to stabilize after 2064 and will be around 1.5 billion by the end of the century, a senior United Nations official said on Monday. John Wilmuth, director of the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, told a press conference here that India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country during April 2023. China’s population had reached its peak in 2022, at 1.4 billion, and then began to decline.
Wilmuth said projections show China’s population could drop below one billion by the end of the century. He said, “On the contrary, India’s population is likely to increase for several decades.” According to the latest assessment of the United Nations and global population estimates released on Monday, India will pass China as the world’s most populous country by the end of this month. The country will be overtaken as a country when its population is expected to reach 1.425 billion.
Responding to a question, senior population affairs officer Sarah Hattreg said that it is estimated that India’s population growth may stop around 2064 and stabilize after that. However, he cautioned that there is some uncertainty with this estimate. Wilmuth said that the main factor in population trends in India and China is the fertility level. He said, ‘In 2022 China had the world’s lowest fertility level, averaging 1.2 births per woman in a lifetime. The current fertility rate in India is 2.0 births per woman.” Between 2023 and 2050, the number of people aged 65 and above is expected to nearly double that of China and more than double that of India, he said. . Meanwhile, it is estimated that the number of people aged 25 to 64 in China will increase in the coming years.
