Tehran: The Iranian Foreign Ministry has sanctioned 17 EU and UK citizens and four entities for supporting terrorism and fueling violence and unrest in Iran. The move is against those who interfere in Iran’s domestic affairs and those who support terrorism and violence, the ministry said in a statement published on its website on Monday, reports a news agency. These people were accused of spreading disinformation about Iran and imposing sanctions on its citizens.
The statement said the sanctions include the suspension of visas and entry into Iran, as well as the freezing of assets and bank accounts. Earlier, the European Union and Britain had imposed sanctions on several Iranian citizens and organizations on the basis of their alleged human rights violations in Iran. In September 2022, Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian girl, died in police custody in a hospital in Tehran. She was arrested by the Iranian morality police for not wearing the hijab properly. Amini’s death sparked fierce protests and social unrest across Iran. Tehran accused the US and some other Western countries of inciting the riots and supporting terrorists in the country.
