Spontaneous demonstrations – “the march of empty pots” took place in France on the anniversary of the re-election of French President Emmanuel Macron for a second presidential term. This was reported by the BFMTV channel.
Several hundred people reportedly gathered outside the Paris City Hall and in the square near the Paris Theater to chant slogans protesting against Macron’s policies and calling for his resignation. Subsequently, the demonstrators “met” the Minister of Culture Papa Ndiaya, who was returning from a work trip. They interrupted his speech at one of the universities and blocked the minister on the train.
As reported, in the future protesters, mostly young people, scattered through the streets of the city, overturning and setting fire to trash cans and bicycles.
Besides Paris, demonstrations took place in Rennes, Nantes, Bordeaux, Marseille, Strasbourg, Lille. In total, more than 400 demonstrations were recorded, one of the largest of which (about 500 people) was in Lyon. Grenoble residents protested by burning an effigy of Macron.
On April 24, 2022, the President of France was re-elected for a second term. In the second round, 58.55% of voters voted for Macron. One of the main reasons for the protesters’ discontent is the pension reform. After its approval by the Constitutional Court, French unions called for an “exclusive and popular” protest action on May Day.
