Ambassadors to the EU again failed to agree on joint ammunition purchases for Ukraine, according to Polish radio RMF FM.
“EU ammunition supply to Ukraine is becoming more and more embarrassing,” said a Western diplomat.
The EU has promised Ukraine 1 million ammunition by the end of the year both in EU countries’ warehouses and through joint purchases. Deliveries from our own warehouses are slowing down considerably. To date, EU countries have shipped less than 40,000 munitions.
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has published a letter in which he calls on the defense ministers of 27 countries to pay attention to this problem. The idea is that they should review their stocks because it is hard to believe they have nothing left, a source told RMF FM.
Tension and annoyance are also growing among EU member states over France’s behavior in blocking joint ammunition purchases. This subject was discussed today by the ambassadors of the EU countries. France wants all the supply chains of ammunition and armament companies to be European.
“You cannot define the European arms industry in this way because we will never supply Ukraine with ammunition,” said a European diplomat.
Previously, the UK sent Ukraine thousands of shells for the Challenger 2, including those containing depleted uranium.
