Italy wants to play a leading role in the reconstruction of Ukraine

Italy intends to play an important role in the restoration of post-war Ukraine and will urge all relevant organizations in the European Union to do so. Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella spoke about it on Wednesday during a meeting in Rome with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal.

The Italian authorities expect that not only money from the budget of European countries, but also contributions from private companies and public organizations will go to help Ukraine.

“We want to play a leadership role not only politically, but also in terms of attracting businesses,” Meloni said.

According to preliminary estimates recently made jointly by the World Bank, the UN, the European Commission and Ukraine, the restoration of a half-destroyed country will require around 411 billion dollars. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tijani said Russia should share the cost of damage to Ukraine.

“Any resolution to the conflict must include a clause that Russia will pay for the damage it has caused,” he said.

The Ukrainian authorities estimate that it is necessary to start the restoration works this year, which will require a first tranche of 14 billion dollars.
