Qatar is unique in the “Desert Embraces Imagination” exhibition.

The Al-Thakhira area and the Qatar National Museum are distinguished by a unique artistic phenomenon, as the Icelandic-Danish artist, Olafur Eliasson, presents his exhibition “The Desert Embraces Imagination”, until August 15, within the framework of the (Qatar Creates) initiative. The exhibition includes a series of artworks to complement the journey of exploring the artist’s interests in lights, colors, engineering studies, awareness of the environment, and the relationships between other organisms. Eliason designed the exhibition, specifically for a desert location outside the Al Thakhira area and for the galleries within the National Museum of Qatar. The exhibition “Desert Embraces Imagination” is the first solo exhibition of artist Olafur Eliasson’s work in the Gulf region. The exhibition brings together dozens of new art installations specific to sites in the desert near the Al Thakhira Mangrove Nature Reserve in northern Qatar, and an extensive display in the galleries of the National Museum of Qatar of artworks created during the artist’s career. The outdoor installation consists of 12 suites that Eliasson considers a desert art laboratory. Many of the experiences within the pavilions use natural phenomena such as wind, water and sunlight to participate in the production of artworks, many of which appear throughout the day, with the change of seasons, or for the duration of the exhibition. At the National Museum of Qatar, interior artworks reflect different periods of Eliasson’s career through a wide range of media, including contemplative light installations, mathematical geometric models, a series of photographs, watercolors, and a research map of the subjects occupied by the artist and his studio. The themes of the exhibition, both internal and external, address the general interests of the artist expressed through his extensive artistic practice.
