On Sunday, House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy in an interview with Fox News already announced that a decision to raise the US national debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion would be made this week.
As the agency’s material indicates, the passage of the law proceeded “with difficulty”. Thus, 217 members of Congress voted “for” the bill, while 215 opposed it.
Whether the Republican-backed bill will now pass the Senate (the upper house of Congress) is currently under debate. For her part, the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, has already ruled out that President Joe Biden will sign this law.
Recall that last January, the United States had reached the maximum level of public debt at 31,400 billion dollars. As previously stated in the US Treasury Department, if the specified limit is not increased, the country will default on government debt.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Washington’s Treasury plans to raise the public debt ceiling a joke and a “new floor”.
