BBC chairman Richard Sharp resigns after Boris Johnson loan dispute

London: BBC chairman Richard Sharp resigned on Friday following a report into whether he failed to properly disclose his involvement in facilitating loans to former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The BBC said barrister Adam Hepp Instal was appointed by the Public Appointments Commissioner to investigate the claims which first appeared in the Sunday Times.

Confirming his resignation, Sharp said the report, which was published on Friday, found that ‘when I breached the governing code for public appointments, he said that a breach does not necessarily invalidate the appointment. Is.’ He said the report found that he played “no role in facilitating, arranging or financing the loan for the former prime minister”. Sharp said that not doing so was an ‘redundancy’ and apologized for it.

In a statement, he said he did not want to be ‘distracted’, adding that it was an honor to chair the BBC. He will remain in office till June until a successor is appointed. In response to his resignation, the BBC board said, “We accept and understand Richard’s decision. We would like to extend our thanks to Richard, who has been a valued and respected colleague and a very effective chairman of the BBC. “The BBC Board believes that Richard is a man of integrity.”
