‘I go out when everyone’s already in bed’: David Beckham opened up about obsessive-compulsive disorder

David Beckham opens up about his struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in a new Netflix documentary about his family. OCD refers to an obsessive state marked by the repeated repetition of some sort of ritual. “I clean very well, but, actually, I don’t know if my wife enjoys it at all, to be honest,” the former captain of the British football team told the Evening Standard.

“The thing is, when everyone is already in bed, I go out, clean the candles, adjust the switches to make sure everything is tidy. I hate coming down in the morning, there are cups and plates and, you know, mugs. It’s tiring to walk around each candle and clean them. I cut the wax, clean the glass, this is my main object of aversion – the soot around the candle … I know it’s strange, ”explained the athlete.

At the same time, he admitted that he “feels obligated” to carry out his assumed duties around the house, despite how “fatiguing” it can be for him.

The famous Beckham family now live in a £25million ($42.6million) home in Holland Park in London. David’s statements are interspersed with an interview he gave to ITV in 2006. “I have this obsessive-compulsive disorder. I have to put everything in a straight line or put everything in pairs. I put cans of Pepsi in the fridge, and if there are too many, I put them somewhere in the cupboard.

“I go to the hotel room and before I relax I have to gather all the pieces of paper and the books and put them in a drawer. Everything has to be perfect.” Asked if he would like to get rid of the repetitive behaviors, Beckham admitted, “I would. I tried and I can’t stop.”

After filming a documentary about the Beckham family, the Netflix team asked the ex-footballer’s wife, Victoria, what she thought of David’s confession of obsessive behavior. The fashion designer replied with a smile that she ‘appreciates’ her husband very much, and to her, he is ‘just perfection itself’
