In a statement, the Rapid Support Forces accused the army of violating a truce agreement brokered by the United States and Saudi Arabia by launching airstrikes on its bases in Omdurman, the city opposite Khartoum. on the other side of the Nile, and Mount Awliya. .

The army accused the Rapid Support Forces of violating the armistice agreement, which is supposed to last until midnight on Sunday.

Despite global calls for talks, army chief Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said it was unacceptable to sit down with RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, whom he described as “the leader of the rebellion”.

Dagalo, known as Hemedti, said the RSF would not hold talks until the fighting ended, adding that the armed forces relentlessly shelled his fighters, and he blamed Burhan for the violence.

“Stop the fighting. After that, we can conduct negotiations,” Dagalo said, accusing the army chief of bringing officials loyal to former President Omar al-Bashir into government.

Are the battles spreading to Sudan?

Meanwhile, the outbreak of clashes in the Darfur region of western Sudan has raised fears of an extension of the conflicts and their spillover outside the capital, Khartoum.

The region is of great importance, due to its vast area, wealth and economic resources.

Darfur is of strategic importance to the warring parties to the conflict in Sudan, the army commander and the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, as both men built their careers in Darfur.

And while the army is now trying to expel the RSF fighters from their positions in Khartoum, the latter could return to its roots in Darfur, in an attempt to regroup and obtain more reinforcements.
