“In these historic elections, we call on the Turkish people to vote for Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the presidential elections,” the Labor and Freedom Alliance, dominated by the People’s Democratic Party, Turkey’s third political force, said in a statement.
The Peoples’ Democratic Party had given tacit support to Kilicdaroglu at the end of March, announcing that it would not nominate anyone from its ranks for the presidential elections.
Party co-chairman Medhat Sinjar said in an interview published by “Sozcu” newspaper on Friday: “Our goals coincide, so we have decided to support Kilicdaroglu.”
“The HDP’s goal is to allow the opposition to win in the first round,” Sinjar said.
Opinion polls show that Kilicdaroglu, who leads a coalition of six opposition parties, is in a good position against Erdogan.
It should be noted that the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the 2018 presidential elections came third, with 8.4% of the vote.
The Turkish government accuses this party of being linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the armed group described as “terrorist” by Ankara and its Western allies.
The main figure of the party, Selahattin Demirtas, has been imprisoned since the end of 2016 for “terrorist propaganda”.
This pro-Kurdish party, which risks being banned, will present candidates in the legislative elections which will also be held on May 14 under the banner of the left-wing Green Party.
