Sudanese in Egypt. What do the numbers say about refugees and residents?

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced that the passage of more than 16,000 non-Egyptians to Egypt has been facilitated, including more than 15,000 Sudanese and around 2,000 foreigners from 50 countries and 6 international organizations.

At the same time, the Egyptian Red Crescent is present at the crossing points of returnees from Sudan and provides them with humanitarian and relief services, in addition to medical examinations through mobile clinics, dry meals and train tickets.

What do the numbers say?

Although there are no detailed official statistics published by Egypt on the number of Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has estimated them at 85,995. refugees and asylum seekers from Sudan and 24,701 refugees and asylum seekers. of South Sudan, according to UNHCR’s latest census is in 2023. The United Nations’ International Organization for Migration has estimated the total number of Sudanese residing in Egypt at around 4 million Sudanese, of whom around 56% are concentrated in the governorates of Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Damietta and Dakahlia.

Sudanese community

110,000,696 Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Egypt. 4 million Sudanese are full residents of Egypt, according to the International Organization for Migration. 37% of the number of refugees residing in Egypt work in fixed jobs and stable businesses. The average age of refugees residing in Egypt is 35, with a balanced ratio between men who represent 50.04% and women who are estimated at 49.7%. 16,000 Sudanese have crossed the Egyptian border since the start of the war, according to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

A sensible Egyptian deal, according to Hussein Hassan, head of the Federation of African Institutions for Slum Clearance:

Egypt plays its international role in protecting refugees, and treats a large number of countries that set up camps for them differently, noting: “Egypt does not have refugees living in tents, on the contrary, they benefit from all the services.” The presence of refugees does not affect the development system, because a very small percentage are those who receive support from civil society organizations, while the rest work, earn and serve the economy. Many of the refugees residing in Egypt are the owners of giant development projects, and they have provided thousands of jobs to Egyptians, in addition to the services they provide at a distinguished level, which has made the country an environment fertile for diversity and everyone is eager to provide their distinguished services, and the citizen is the ultimate beneficiary, he said.A large number of refugees have helped the Egyptian economy, such as the Syrians who have invested in the food and set up giant projects. A small number of refugees residing in Egypt live on the financial support given to them by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) based in Egypt, in the form of food or financial assistance. Efforts should be made to increase funding levels to cover the needs of refugees, in order to provide them with comprehensive protection, as Egypt is one of the countries that receives the least funding allocations. The presence of the Sudanese is welcome, and Egypt provides them with all the facilities by which they can enter its lands, given the difficult conditions prevailing there. A large number of Egyptians are taking initiatives to help Sudanese refugees and lend a hand in various ways, such as providing them with free food, drink and accommodation.
