Dubai: United Arab Emirates (UAE) astronaut Sultan Al-Neyadi has become the first Arab citizen to walk in space. His historic walk out of the International Space Station (ISS) lasted for nearly seven hours. Al-Neyadi performed the spacewalk with NASA flight engineer Stephen Bowen. During this, the two successfully carried out several tasks, including serializing the power cables. Before the walk, al-Neyadi and Bowen underwent a two-hour ‘oxygen sprinkling’ procedure, in which oxygen gas was pumped into their bodies and nitrogen gas was exhaled, so that they would not be at risk in zero gravity.
Afterward, Warren Hoberg and Frank Rubio helped the two astronauts put on their spacesuits, a herculean task in itself. It took an hour for al-Neyadi and Bowen to put on the spacesuits and other protective equipment. The two faced two major challenges – radiation and extreme temperatures – during their high-altitude walk outside the ISS. Al-Neyadi, who launched into space on March 2 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, is soon to complete two months in space. In his second month aboard the International Space Station, al-Neyadi has conducted several experiments.
