Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Syrian Archive in the National Library

The IFLA Regional Center for the Preservation of Documentary Heritage in the Arab Countries and the Middle East is holding an event at the Qatar National Library on the Syrian Design Archive project, a non-profit documentation project that aims to archive graphic design and visual elements that include the journey of the development of Arabic calligraphy in Syria.

The archive has evolved into a digital archive that documents the types and forms of design and applications of Arabic calligraphy in its various forms. It is divided into several branches, including publications, media, television, street signs, and stamps. It aims to create an open reference digital archive for researchers and students, in the era of rapid technology.

The Syrian Design Archive achieved great success in a short period of time, which allowed people to evoke the past era through nostalgia associated with shapes and elements that influenced their lives and made new generations live the atmosphere and arts of the past. This archive is also a project based on the celebration of the unique artistic heritage of Syria.

Speaking at this event will be Kinda Ghannoum, a multi-disciplinary designer who co-founded the Syrian Design Archive. She has created and designed identities for NGOs, the Obama Foundation, and startups around the world and is passionate about art, print, and research. Sally El Assafine: Architect and co-founder of the Syrian Design Archive. She has a great passion for street photography and Arabic typography for old shop signs. Hala Al-Afsa also speaks: She majored in architecture before turning her interest from architecture to visual communication and graphic design, and has a deep interest in Arabic typography and graphic projects and exploratory projects on the arts and human relations.
