Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

The Red Crescent supports thousands of Sudanese with food

An official source from the Qatar Red Crescent has confirmed that it is working with the Sudanese Red Crescent to provide aid to those affected by the recent armed conflict in Khartoum and other cities in western Sudan. The Qatar Red Crescent is coordinating with its partners in the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the Sudanese Red Crescent, the Humanitarian Aid Commission in Sudan, the Ministry of Humanitarian Aid in Sudan, and the Sudanese Health Ministry to provide urgent relief assistance.

The Qatar Red Crescent is preparing to provide food baskets to more than 2,500 families and hygiene kits to those in need. The organization is also continuously monitoring the situation to provide additional assistance if necessary. However, the operation faces challenges due to the complex security situation for transportation of relief materials and the scarcity of foodstuffs in the region.

The urgent humanitarian needs of those affected by the conflict include foodstuffs, shelter supplies, non-food items, health services, clean water, sanitation services, personal hygiene materials, psychological and social support services, as well as coordination and support services. The humanitarian needs in Sudan had already reached record levels before the latest conflict broke out on April 15, 2023. About a third of the total population, or 15.8 million people, were already in need of humanitarian assistance, and this number has increased by 1.5 million people from the previous year.

Monitoring agencies predict that around 4 million children under the age of five and pregnant and breastfeeding women will suffer from malnutrition, which requires life-saving nutrition services in 2023. Before the current conflict, humanitarian organizations aimed to reach 12.5 million vulnerable people across the country with some form of humanitarian assistance. However, lack of resources was a major constraint, as the Humanitarian Response Plan was only funded by 13.5%.

In reference to the content, Google News reported on April 30, 2023, that the Qatar Red Crescent and other organizations are working to provide aid to those affected by the recent armed conflict in Sudan. The article highlights the challenges faced by aid organizations due to the complex security situation and the scarcity of foodstuffs in the region. It also mentions the urgent humanitarian needs of those affected by the conflict, including food, shelter, health services, and support services.
