The UN envoy to Sudan confirms that the two sides of the conflict are open to dialogue

The UN envoy to Sudan, Volker Peretz, confirmed yesterday that the two sides of the conflict are open to dialogue, despite the denials of the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces that they accepted negotiations and violated the successive truces.

Peretz said that the two sides nominated envoys for upcoming negotiations outside Sudan, pointing out that there is no timetable for these talks.

On the other hand, the Sudanese army has repeatedly declared its refusal to negotiate with the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).

The General Command of the Sudanese Army said that Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Commander of the Army, agreed to an initiative put forward by the IGAD organization to extend the truce in Sudan for an additional 72 hours, while the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, put forward a proposal for dialogue between Al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Commander, Muhammad Hamdan Hemedti. .

The official spokesman for the Sudanese army said that an initiative put forward by the IGAD (Intergovernmental Organization for the Development of East African Summit) resulted in extending the current truce to an additional 72 hours, which ended on Thursday.

According to the official spokesman for the army, Al-Burhan agreed in principle to send one representative from the armed forces and from the Rapid Support Forces to Juba, the capital of southern Sudan, for the purpose of negotiating the details of the IGAD initiative.

For his part, South Sudanese Foreign Minister Deng Dau said, in media statements, that the country’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, presented the Sudanese army commander, Al-Burhan, and the commander of the support forces, Hemedti, with a proposal for dialogue outside or inside Sudan.

Daw added that Al-Burhan and Hemedti did not accept dialogue, whether inside or outside Sudan, at least for the time being, adding that direct dialogue at the present time is not possible between the two men due to the current circumstances, referring to the clashes between the two parties.
