The Delhi Police will provide security to wrestlers and complainants in connection with the sexual harassment allegations against Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and their statements will be recorded. A Delhi Police source gave this information on Saturday.
BJP MP Singh has been accused of sexual harassment by seven women wrestlers and a minor girl. The police will now record the statements of these seven complainants. A source said the incidents mentioned in the FIR allegedly took place between 2012 and 2022 at various places, including abroad.
Meanwhile, the ‘Indian Women Press Corps’ (IWPC) on Saturday urged the government to consider sympathetically the issues raised by the protesting women wrestlers demanding an inquiry against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment. In a statement, the IWPC said it stands in solidarity with the women wrestlers.
It also condemned any form of harassment and sexual exploitation of women sportspersons. It may be noted that Delhi Police on Friday registered two FIRs in connection with allegations of sexual harassment by women wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. A senior police officer had said on Friday that two FIRs have been registered at the Connaught Place police station on the complaint of women wrestlers.
He had said that the first FIR pertains to allegations made by a minor, under which a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The wrestlers, who have accused Singh of sexual harassment and intimidation, resumed their agitation from 23 April. Earlier, they had staged a sit-in in January.
