United Nations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is urgently dispatching the world body’s Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths to Sudan in response to the rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan. A spokesman for the United Nations gave this information on Sunday.

Mr. Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement that the scale and speed of what is happening in Sudan is unprecedented. He said the UN is deeply concerned with the immediate as well as long-term impact on all people in Sudan and the wider region.

“We once again urge all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and allow safe passage for civilians,” he added. According to Sudan’s Ministry of Health, more than 500 people have been killed and more than 4,000 injured in clashes between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force on 15 April.

Mr Griffiths issued a statement ahead of his visit to the region, saying that two weeks after the conflict began, the humanitarian situation is reaching breaking point. He said survival goods are becoming scarcer in the worst affected urban centres, especially Khartoum, and people are struggling to access water, food, fuel and other vital items.

Mr Griffiths said he was visiting the region to find out how to provide immediate relief to millions of people.
