The film “Kalina Krasnaya” turned into death for Vasily Shukshin

In the spring of 1973, Vasily Shukshin began working on the filming of the film “Kalina Krasnaya”. He acted as a director and performer of the main role. The film was released in 1974 and broke all audience records. However, Shukshin did not find out, because he died in the fall of that year, writes Arguments and Facts.

Film authorities initially blocked Shukshin from working on the film. He was pressed for time and budget. When the film was sent to the capital for development, malicious critics reported that the reels came with a wedding. Shukshin nearly had a heart attack upon discovering the truth.

A stuntman from Moscow was supposed to act in the scene of chasing the bandits’ cars, but he refused at the last moment. This task was given to a local racing driver. However, the first brace ended with both of the man’s legs being broken.

At the end of filming, the images filmed the scene of a feast organized by a recently released repeat offender. In the frame, Shukshin spoke in close-up about how we live, like spiders in a jar, and called on the audience to be friends. This scene became one of the most memorable and memorable in the film.

However, Mosfilm director Nikolai Sizov asked Shukshin to remove the conversation about the death from the film, believing it could have a painful effect on audiences. Shukshin agreed to this.

Nevertheless, in life everything happened exactly as it was prophetically filmed in the picture. “Kalina Krasnaya” became incredibly popular after its release, and Shukshin himself died in the fall of that year.
